My Mediocre Superpower

A fun question I’ve heard people ask many times is, if you could have a superpower, what would your superpower be? It’s a neat ice breaker and you learn a bit about the person who answers. I have a couple picks; one is teleportation (across short or long distances, like NightCrawler) or Size shifting  (the ability to increase or decrease my size, like Dr. Henry Pym). Not your typical superpowers of flying or super speed, but still pretty fun ones.

The other day I came across an interview that Sarah Lacy did with Andreeseen Horowitz and one of the questions she asked towards the end of the interview was, “What would your Mediocre Superpower be?” It’s a pretty interesting question since most people have a quick canned answer for their normal superpower. It seems like it would take everyone awhile to think about what their mediocre superpower would be but I had one right way. Being a terrible speller, my mediocre superpower would be the abilty to spell any word correctly, the first time.

What would your mediocre superpower be?

Your Work Power Song

I love the idea of a power song when you’re running. I have a couple go to tracks when I’m running that either pump me up or at least make me glad I’m out running. One of those tracks is Miley CyrusParty In The U.S.A. Yeah, I know… not exactly a song you thought I’d be listening to or even admit to listening to. Hey, it’s a fun track and it’s easy to get caught up in while you’re running. You lose track of what you’re doing and you just run… push yourself a little further or a little harder and that’s the point of a power song. Your track probably isn’t Party In The U.S.A. but if you run, I’m sure you have a couple tracks that help motivate you too.

If the power song works for when you’re running or working out, why not for when you’re at your desk too. Being in front of a computer for 14 hours a day, every day, I’m always searching for new stuff to listen to or even watch. Which is great for helping spark that creativity but when I really want to focus I often find myself playing some of the same albums over and over again. These are albums I know pretty well and I’m comfortable just getting lost in them. I’m not focused on the music and I’m not only focusing on the work it just sort of helps get me into a groove and push me forward on a project. The same way Party In The U.S.A. gets me lost in a run, albums like Fleetwood MacRumors”, Kanye WestGraduation” and Black KeysBrothers” can just be playing and I know it’s going to be a productive day.

Success isn’t measured by money or power or social rank. Success is measured by your discipline and inner peace.
