It’s been a pretty great year for music, no there wasn’t a new Hanson album this year but there was still some excellent stuff released. For me it was pretty hard to pick just a few but the ones that stood out to me are ones that get played almost daily. Lately I’ve been rocking a lot of hip hop in the office so my top ten albums of 2011 are a bit focused there.
I had no idea who Tabi Bonney was before I wandered into the Murs show at Reggies. But I’m really happy I found him because this album just makes me feel better. It’s one of those albums you can play at any moment of any day and just vibe to it. I have a feeling Tabi Bonney is a name we’re going to be hearing more from.
Whenever I’m done listening to Murs I always wish I had another album to play because Murs is simply amazing. I usually end up having to play the Felt
albums to get my full. So I was really excited to see a new album get released this year. I was even more excited that I was able to see Murs live here in Chicago. The man just delivers the lyrics and the style is typical Murs. The beats are a bit slower then some other albums but there are some songs on this one that just make you feel good you listen to this type of music.
Released really early this year, so many of you might of forgetten about this album but it’s worth giving a listen. If you’re just looking for something fun to dance to then this is right up your alley. Zonoscope is all the things you liked about In Ghost Colours and more.
My buddy Jake really turned me onto Grieves this past year. I knew about this young MC but never really listened to him that often. But this album is simply amazing, it rivals some of my favorite Atmosphere albums. From beginning to end you will be impressed with the flow, lyrically and musically. I’ve put this entire album on repeat a number of times. Highly recommend it while you’re at it you might as well give last years release 88 Keys & Counting
Now this is a re-release from his 2008 album but this version is a 2 CD release with 7 bonus tracks. If you’re a fan of Blue Scholars and Common Market I’d highly recommend checking out Bambu. Bambu can pull you in with just a few dope lines, at times this album is playful and very often political. Sorry this album isn’t on rdio so I don’t have a cool looking widget for it but if you click the link above you can listen to the whole thing on Spotify.
Man this dude is finally famous… was wondering when it was going to happen. Overall this album is pretty solid all the way through with a few great songs and then a few songs that aren’t perfect but still pretty good nonetheless. Finally Famous is worth checking out.
This is probably the most modern rap album on the my list. If you’re more of a fan of B.o.B., Drake, and KiD CuDi I have a feeling you’ll like what Wiz has to offer. This album dosen’t reinvent the wheel or anything but it’s fun and you’ll find yourself singing along.
Yes another D.C. rapper on my list. Coming off the heels of the previous album Attention Deficit, which I enjoyed but didn’t go over well with the critics. I think Ambition has everything you found lacking in Attention Deficit. Wale has his own style that’s fun and unique and with tracks like Slight Work you might find yourself shaking your stuff.
Now this might be a Christmas album and really it’s not going to get much play outside of the holiday season but it was a fantastic album that I couldn’t stop playing the last few weeks. Zooey Deschanel’s sweet voice just makes Christmas feel right. I have a feeling this is going to be one I’ll be enjoying again next Christmas.
The advice that everyone likes to tell you is to do what you love. On the surface it’s great advice. What you do as a job will fill a large part of your time and life. So if you love baking at home for your family then why not quit the job you don’t find fulfilling and start a bakery? You’d love it that much more if you were doing it full time, right? But if you start a business doing what you love there is a good chance you might end up loving to hate it. That passion you once had can quickly grow into hate. You changed that fun thing you loved and made it a job. The joy you had can be lost when you’re spending a good amount of time dealing with paperwork and trying to make customers and clients happy. Maybe you realize you loved baking because it was an escape from your other job. Now you have no escape or hobby because this is what is paying your bills. And while starting this new business you found a new love for photography and you decide to give up baking and start a photography business. Now the cycle starts over… never quite happy because you are always discovering new and exciting things.
There are a lot of things I love to do but I don’t want to make it my job because I know I could grow to hate it. One way I’ve been able to keep my passion for what I’m doing is to focus on loving what I’m doing. Embracing and appreciating what I’m doing at this very moment. I may not always like every thing I have to do but I’ve learned that even the parts I may not like at the moment are all parts of the bigger piece. In building a business you can get bogged down in a lot of other duties that take time away from your true love for a little while. This can frustrate you and make you regret doing what you love. I’ve learned to accept that each part of my business is important. I took this career path because I wanted to do what I love; motion graphics. But I now I’ve found that I love what I do; I love building a business. My passion has grown and evolved, its not just based in creating motion graphics but its also in creating a business. You never know what path your life is going to take you down and you might find something you love doing that surprises you.
Another way I’ve found to stay focused on my passion is to hire someone to handle the parts of my business that I don’t like doing. For many, the moment they aren’t doing the the thing they love to do they are going to start to hate that very thing they loved in the first place. If you don’t like talking to clients or customers then hire someone that does so you can stay focused on what you love doing and together you can build something great. The only way to do great work is to love what you do.
Make sure that if you do what you love that you also try to love what you do. Every day is a gift and we don’t get to do it over again.
